Take in the beauty of southeastern Alaska and photograph bald eagles against the dramatic landscape

With the guidance of an expert naturalist and photographer

Haines, Alaska is a beautiful little port along the southeast region of Alaska. Located at the mouth of the Chilkat River and nestled between tall mountain peaks in all directions, the region around Haines attracts the world’s largest concentration of bald eagles each fall. More than 2,000 bald eagles feast on one of the last salmon runs of the season because underground springs keep these waters ice fre. This destination and photo tour is a must-do for anyone who loves to photograph bald eagles, the new national bird of the U.S. Dozens of eagles will be accessible for photography along the river – from snagging fish out of the river to perched in trees to fighting for the food on the river banks.

In addition to the eagles, this photo tour will explore the area to find other Alaskan wildlife, with the potential for owls, fox, grizzly bears and moose. Haines is also one of the few places where visitors can snap a photo of the Welcome to Alaska sign along an entrance road into the remote state.

The bonus for this trip is the timing to catch the northern lights. With the peak of the solar cycle reached in October 2024, the northern lights will continue to provide stunning displays across the evening sky through 2025. Should the skies remain clear and the solar storms be strong for our group, we will venture out into the evening to photograph Lady Aurora over snow-capped peaks and coastal forests.

An autumn photography tour of Haines to photograph bald eagles and more isn’t just a chance to capture stunning images—it’s an opportunity to connect with nature in its most tranquil and transformative form.
